1887Battle of Dogali fought in EritreaEthiopian forces defeat an Italian garrisonAn Ethiopian force under Ras Alula Engida ambushes and destroys an Italian column near Dogali in the Eritrean highlands, killing around 430 Italian soldiers. The defeat shocks public opinion in Italy and slows, but does not halt, Italian colonial expansion in the region. Italy formally establishes the colony of Eritrea the following year.
