1886Geronimo surrendersApache leader ends decades of resistance in ArizonaThe Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo surrendered to General Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon in Arizona Territory, ending the last major armed Native American resistance against the United States. He and his followers were sent into exile as prisoners of war in Florida and later Oklahoma. His surrender marked the effective close of the Apache Wars.
