1886Statue of Liberty dedicatedGift from France dedicated in New York HarborThe Statue of Liberty was formally dedicated on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor before a crowd of dignitaries and a flotilla of ships. Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi with an iron framework by Gustave Eiffel, it was a gift from the people of France marking Franco-American friendship. It became an enduring symbol of the United States and of immigration to America.
