1884International Meridian Conference held in WashingtonDelegates agree on Greenwich as the world prime meridianRepresentatives of 25 nations met in Washington, D.C. to standardize global timekeeping and geographic reference. The conference adopted the meridian through Greenwich, England as the world prime meridian and established the basis for a universal day divided into 24 time zones. The agreement underpinned the worldwide standard time system still in use today.
