1883Destruction of the Hicks Pasha expeditionMahdist forces annihilate an Egyptian army in SudanAt the Battle of Shaykan near El Obeid, Mahdist rebels under Muhammad Ahmad destroyed an Egyptian expeditionary force led by British officer William Hicks. Nearly the entire force of some 8,000 men was killed, a disaster that exposed Egyptian rule in Sudan to collapse.
