Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act on 6 May 1882, suspending immigration of Chinese laborers to the United States for ten years. It was the first major US law to restrict immigration based on nationality. The act remained in force, with renewals, until its repeal in 1943.
1882Phoenix Park MurdersIrish nationalists assassinate two senior British officials in DublinMembers of the Irish National Invincibles stabbed to death Lord Frederick Cavendish, the newly appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland, and Thomas Henry Burke, the Permanent Undersecretary, in Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 6 May 1882. The killings shocked Britain and derailed attempts at conciliation between the government and Irish nationalists. Several conspirators were later tried and hanged.
