1807 – 1882Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)Died 24 March 1882, aged 75Longfellow was the most popular American poet of his era, known for works including "Paul Revere's Ride," "The Song of Hiawatha," and "Evangeline." His verse was widely read on both sides of the Atlantic and translated into numerous languages. He died at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
1882Assassination attempt on Queen VictoriaRoderick Maclean fires on the queen at WindsorRoderick Maclean fired a pistol at Queen Victoria as she left Windsor railway station on 2 March 1882, missing her. It was the eighth and last of the assassination attempts made on Victoria during her reign. Maclean was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to an asylum for life.

1882Discovery of the tuberculosis bacteriumRobert Koch identifies the cause of tuberculosisOn 24 March 1882, German physician Robert Koch announced to the Berlin Physiological Society that he had identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis as the cause of tuberculosis. The disease was then killing roughly one in seven people in Europe. Koch's finding confirmed germ theory and opened the way to modern bacteriology.
