1882Bombardment of AlexandriaRoyal Navy shells Egyptian coastal fortsBritish warships bombarded the fortifications of Alexandria on 11 July 1882 after Egyptian nationalist forces under Ahmed Urabi fortified the harbor against foreign intervention. The attack destroyed the forts and much of the city burned in the unrest that followed. It marked the start of direct British military intervention in Egypt.
1882Premiere of Wagner's ParsifalRichard Wagner's final opera opens at BayreuthRichard Wagner's opera Parsifal premiered at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 26 July 1882, in a run of sixteen performances that Wagner personally supervised. It was his last completed work and the only one he wrote specifically for the Bayreuth stage. Wagner died less than eight months later.
