• 1882 Standard Oil Trust established Rockefeller consolidates the US oil industry under a single trust On 2 January 1882, John D. Rockefeller and his partners formed the Standard Oil Trust, combining dozens of separate companies under a single board of trustees. The structure let Standard Oil dominate American oil refining while skirting state laws against owning out-of-state companies. It became the model that later antitrust law was written to prevent.
