His combative prose style and moral seriousness made him one of the most influential writers of Victorian Britain. He died at his home in Chelsea, London.
1881Battle of Majuba HillDecisive Boer victory ending the First Boer WarBoer forces defeated a British garrison occupying Majuba Hill in the Transvaal, inflicting heavy casualties including the death of British commander George Pomeroy Colley.
