1880 – 1890Ten years in refrigerationIce machines in ParisDiesel joins Linde's firm in Paris, becomes its director, and spends a decade building industrial ice plants across Europe. He is good at it and it bores him. In every spare hour he works on ammonia vapour engines, solar-powered engines, and anything that might approach the Carnot ideal. Several of the experiments come close to killing him.
1880Ferry Decrees issued in FranceAnti-clerical laws target Catholic religious ordersThe French government issued decrees on 29 March 1880 restricting unauthorized religious congregations, most notably ordering the Jesuits to disband within France. The decrees intensified the Third Republic's conflict with the Catholic Church over control of education. Several orders had their property confiscated or were expelled in the months that followed.
