1879Massacre of the British Residency in KabulAfghan troops kill the British envoy and his guardMutinous Afghan soldiers besieged and overran the British mission in Kabul, killing envoy Sir Louis Cavagnari and his entire escort. The massacre reignited the Second Anglo-Afghan War just months after the Treaty of Gandamak had ended its first phase. British forces under General Roberts marched on Kabul in response.
