Tweed (1823-1878)Died 12 April 1878, aged 55An American politician who controlled New York City's Democratic political machine, Tammany Hall, and oversaw large-scale public corruption. Investigations and a sensational trial exposed the "Tweed Ring's" theft of tens of millions of dollars from the city. He died in a New York City jail after being recaptured following an escape to Spain.
