• 1875 Britain purchases Suez Canal shares Disraeli buys Egypt's stake in the canal company Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli arranged a loan from the Rothschild bank to purchase the Khedive of Egypt's 44 percent shareholding in the Suez Canal Company. The deal gave Britain a controlling strategic interest in the canal route to India without prior parliamentary approval.
