1873Vienna World's FairWeltausstellung 1873 opens in Austria-HungaryEmperor Franz Joseph I opened the World's Fair in Vienna on 1 May 1873, the first world's fair held in a German-speaking country. A cholera outbreak and the concurrent stock market crash hurt attendance, but the fair still drew millions of visitors from around the globe before closing on 31 October.
1873League of Three Emperors formedGermany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia alignChancellor Otto von Bismarck brought Emperor Wilhelm I into an understanding with Austria-Hungary and Russia, completed in Berlin in October 1873, binding the three conservative monarchies to consult on mutual interests. The Dreikaiserbund aimed to isolate France and preserve monarchical solidarity in Europe.
1873Modoc War endsCaptain Jack executed for Canby's killingThe Modoc War in northern California and Oregon ended after Modoc leader Kintpuash, known as Captain Jack, surrendered following months of resistance from lava-bed strongholds. He was hanged at Fort Klamath on 3 October 1873 for his role in killing US Army General Edward Canby during peace talks.
