1873Anglo-Zanzibar treaty ends the slave tradeSultan Barghash agrees to close Zanzibar's slave marketUnder pressure from British diplomat John Kirk, Sultan Barghash bin Said of Zanzibar signed a treaty on 5 June 1873 banning the seaborne slave trade in his dominions. The Zanzibar slave market, once East Africa's largest, was closed shortly afterward.
