1811 – 1872Horace Greeley (1811-1872)Died 29 November 1872, aged 61Horace Greeley was an American newspaper editor who founded the New York Tribune and used it to campaign against slavery and for social reform. He ran for president in 1872 as a Liberal Republican against Ulysses S. Grant and died shortly after his defeat.
1872Modoc War beginsConflict erupts between the U.S. Army and the Modoc peopleFighting broke out after federal troops attempted to force the Modoc people back onto a reservation in northern California, beginning at the Battle of Lost River. The war continued into 1873 and ended with the execution of Modoc leader Kintpuash (Captain Jack).
