1841 – 1870Frederic Bazille (1841-1870)Died 28 November 1870, aged 29Frederic Bazille, a French painter associated with the early Impressionist circle including Monet and Renoir, was killed in action at Beaune-la-Rolande during the Franco-Prussian War on 28 November 1870. He had helped finance and support his fellow Impressionist painters before his death. His promising career was cut short at age 29.
1870Deported as an enemy alienParis to London to Augsburg, aged twelveThe Franco-Prussian War breaks out and the Diesels, like thousands of other Germans in Paris, are given days to leave. They go to London. Within months his mother sends him alone to his aunt and uncle in Augsburg to learn German properly. He arrives barely speaking it and enrols at the Royal County Trade School.
