1869Congress passes the Fifteenth AmendmentAmendment barring race-based voting restrictions sent to statesThe US Congress approved the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting federal and state governments from denying citizens the vote based on race or previous condition of servitude. It was sent to the states for ratification, completed the following year. The amendment followed the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments as part of Reconstruction-era civil rights legislation.
