1867Tokugawa shogun surrenders political powerTaisei Hokan returns authority to the emperorShogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu offered to resign his political authority and return it to Emperor Meiji, an act known as Taisei Hokan. The move ended over two and a half centuries of shogunate rule and set the stage for the Meiji Restoration proclaimed in January 1868. It opened the way for Japan's rapid modernization.
