It featured early demonstrations of technologies including reinforced concrete and aluminum. The fair reinforced Paris's status as a center of international culture during the Second Empire.
• 1867 Battle of Mentana French and Papal forces halt Garibaldi's march on Rome Giuseppe Garibaldi led irregular volunteers in an attempt to seize Rome from the Papal States and complete Italian unification. A combined force of Papal troops and French reinforcements armed with new Chassepot rifles defeated Garibaldi's men at Mentana. Rome remained under papal control until 1870.
