1867Alfred Nobel patents dynamiteStabilized nitroglycerin explosive introducedSwedish chemist Alfred Nobel patented dynamite, a mixture of nitroglycerin with an absorbent stabilizer that made the explosive far safer to handle and transport than pure nitroglycerin. The invention transformed mining, quarrying, and construction, and made Nobel's fortune. Nobel later used part of that wealth to endow the Nobel Prizes.
