1815 – 1852Ada LovelaceMathematician & First Computer ProgrammerAugusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, was an English mathematician best known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Her 1843 notes on the machine include what is recognized as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a computer, earning her the informal title of the first computer programmer. Daughter of the poet Lord Byron, she was raised by her mother to study mathematics and science rather than poetry, a path that led her to a lifelong intellectual partnership with Babbage. Though she died young, her writings anticipated the potential of computing machines to go far beyond arithmetic.
1852Death of Ada LovelaceAda dies at age 36Ada Lovelace died on 27 November 1852 at the age of 36, the same age at which her father, Lord Byron, had died. Her final months were marked by considerable suffering, and she was attended by her husband and mother, with whom she had reconciled after some estrangement. Her death cut short a scientific career that had only recently begun to fully mature.
