1804 – 1849Johann Strauss I (1804-1849)Died 25 September 1849, aged 45Austrian composer and violinist known as the father of the waltz, famous for works including the Radetzky March. He died in Vienna during a scarlet fever epidemic. His son Johann Strauss II would eclipse him as the "Waltz King".
