1849Battle of NovaraAustria crushes Piedmont-Sardinia, ending the First Italian War of IndependenceAustrian forces under Marshal Radetzky decisively defeated the army of the Kingdom of Sardinia near Novara. The defeat forced King Charles Albert to abdicate in favor of his son Victor Emmanuel II the following day. The battle ended the First Italian War of Independence in Austria's favor.
