• 1849 Elizabeth Blackwell earns first US medical degree awarded to a woman Geneva Medical College graduates America's first female physician Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York, becoming the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. She had been admitted only after the all-male student body voted, as a joke, to accept her. She went on to found medical institutions for women.
