1849Surrender at VilágosHungarian forces capitulate, ending the Hungarian RevolutionThe main Hungarian army surrendered to Russian forces at Világos after Tsar Nicholas I intervened to help Austria suppress the revolution. The surrender effectively ended the Hungarian War of Independence. Austrian reprisals against revolutionary leaders followed in the months after.
