1849Safety pin patentedWalter Hunt patents the modern coiled safety pinNew York inventor Walter Hunt patented the safety pin, a single piece of wire with a clasp and coiled spring. He reportedly sold the patent rights for 400 dollars to pay off a debt. The design remains essentially unchanged in everyday use today.
