1844Hōne Heke cuts down the Kororāreka flagstaffMāori chief's protest opens the Flagstaff WarNgāpuhi chief Hōne Heke cut down the British flagstaff on Maiki Hill above Kororāreka in protest at colonial rule. He cut it down several more times in the months that followed. The dispute grew into the Flagstaff War of 1845–46.
