1844Bank Charter ActBank of England given control of banknote issueRobert Peel's Bank Charter Act limited the issue of new banknotes to the Bank of England. It also required that notes issued beyond a fixed amount be backed by gold. The act formed the basis of British monetary policy for much of the nineteenth century.
