1844Dominican Republic declares independence from HaitiSeparatists seize Santo Domingo and end Haitian ruleMembers of the secret society La Trinitaria, led by Juan Pablo Duarte's associates, proclaimed independence at the Puerta del Conde in Santo Domingo. This ended 22 years of Haitian control over the eastern part of Hispaniola. The date is celebrated as the Dominican Republic's national independence day.
