1774 – 1844Francis Baily (1774-1844)Died 30 August 1844, aged 70English astronomer and a founder of the Royal Astronomical Society. He described "Baily's beads", the points of sunlight seen at the edge of the Moon during a solar eclipse.
1844Battle of IslyFrench army routs Moroccan forces near OujdaFrench forces under Marshal Thomas-Robert Bugeaud defeated a much larger Moroccan army commanded by the sultan's son near the Isly river. Morocco had given shelter to the Algerian resistance leader Abd al-Qadir. The defeat forced Morocco to sign the Treaty of Tangier that September.
