1843Paulet Affair in HawaiiBritish captain occupies the Kingdom of Hawaii for five monthsCaptain Lord George Paulet of HMS Carysfort forced King Kamehameha III to cede the Hawaiian Kingdom to Britain. Rear Admiral Richard Thomas restored Hawaiian sovereignty on 31 July, which Hawaii later marked as Restoration Day.
