• 1841 Uprising against British forces begins in Kabul Prelude to the disastrous retreat during the First Anglo-Afghan War On 2 November 1841, Afghan tribesmen in Kabul rose up against the British garrison occupying the city, killing political officer Sir Alexander Burnes. The revolt set in motion the events that led to the catastrophic British retreat from Kabul in January 1842, in which thousands of soldiers and camp followers died. The uprising marked a turning point in the First Anglo-Afghan War.
