• 1841 Doctoral Degree from Jena PhD on Democritus and Epicurus Marx received his doctorate in philosophy in 1841 from the University of Jena, submitting his dissertation from a distance after his radical reputation made a Berlin degree unlikely. Titled "The Difference Between the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature," the dissertation examined ancient materialist philosophy and hinted at Marx's later concern with human freedom and self-consciousness. He hoped for an academic career, but Prussian government hostility toward Young Hegelians closed that path.
