1838Treaty of Balta Liman Opens Ottoman MarketsAnglo-Ottoman trade convention abolishes Ottoman monopoliesBritain and the Ottoman Empire signed the Treaty of Balta Liman, eliminating Ottoman state trade monopolies and fixing low tariffs on British goods entering Ottoman markets. The agreement opened the empire to large-scale European imports and is widely seen by historians as accelerating Ottoman economic dependency on Europe. Other European powers soon negotiated similar terms.
