1835Assassination attempt on Andrew JacksonFirst attempt to kill a sitting US presidentRichard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter, fired two pistols at President Andrew Jackson in the US Capitol rotunda; both misfired. Jackson was unhurt and personally confronted his attacker with his cane. Lawrence was later found insane and committed to an asylum.
