1757 – 1834Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834)Died 20 May 1834, aged 76Lafayette was a French aristocrat who fought as a general in the American Revolutionary War and later became a leading figure in the French Revolution. He helped draft an early version of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and repeatedly returned to public life during France's political upheavals. He died in Paris and was buried under soil brought from Bunker Hill.
