1834Tolpuddle Martyrs Convicted and Sentenced to TransportationDorset farm labourers sentenced for forming a unionSix Dorset farm labourers were convicted under an obscure law for administering secret oaths after forming a friendly society to resist wage cuts. They were sentenced to seven years of transportation to Australia. The case became a rallying point for the British trade union movement, and the men were later pardoned.
