1761 – 1834William Carey (1761-1834)Died 9 June 1834, aged 72Carey was an English Baptist missionary, translator, and botanist who spent four decades in India, translating the Bible into Bengali and other South Asian languages. He helped found Serampore College and is often called the father of modern Protestant missions. He died at Serampore, near Calcutta.
1834Cyrus McCormick Patents the Mechanical ReaperA horse-drawn machine to cut grainCyrus McCormick patented a horse-drawn reaping machine in Virginia, improving on a design his father had developed. The reaper could cut grain far faster than hand labour, and McCormick later built a manufacturing empire around it in Chicago. The invention became a cornerstone of American agricultural mechanization.
