• 1834 Spanish Inquisition Formally Abolished Royal decree ends the centuries-old tribunal A royal decree issued under the regency of Maria Cristina formally abolished the Spanish Inquisition, which had already been stripped of most power in preceding decades. The tribunal had policed religious orthodoxy in Spain and its empire since 1478. Its abolition marked a symbolic break with the old regime during the First Carlist War.
