• 1768 – 1834 Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) Died 12 February 1834, aged 65 Schleiermacher was a German theologian and philosopher often called the father of modern liberal Protestant theology. He argued that religion rests on feeling and intuition rather than doctrine alone, and he helped found the University of Berlin. His translations of Plato remained standard German editions for generations.
