1834British East India Company Loses Its China Trade MonopolyCharter Act of 1833 takes effectProvisions of the Charter Act of 1833 took effect, stripping the British East India Company of its monopoly on trade with China and ending its remaining commercial functions in India. The Company continued as an administrative body governing British India under Crown oversight. The change opened Asian trade to private British merchants.
1834Quadruple Alliance Signed Against Iberian PretendersBritain, France, Spain and Portugal ally against Carlists and MiguelitesBritain, France, Spain, and Portugal signed the Quadruple Alliance to support the liberal governments of Isabella II of Spain and Maria II of Portugal against the rival claims of Don Carlos and Dom Miguel. The pact committed naval and diplomatic support to help suppress the Carlist and Miguelite risings. It reinforced liberal constitutional rule on the Iberian Peninsula.
