• 1833 First Carlist War begins Spanish civil war erupts over succession to the throne Following the death of King Ferdinand VII, his brother Don Carlos refused to recognize the infant Isabella II as queen and claimed the throne himself, triggering armed uprisings in the Basque Country and Navarre in early October 1833. The war pitted traditionalist Carlists against liberal supporters of Isabella and her regent mother. Fighting continued for years and shaped Spanish politics for decades.
