1833Treaty of Hunkar Iskelesi signedRussia and the Ottoman Empire form a defensive allianceSigned on 8 July 1833, the treaty bound the Ottoman Empire and Russia to mutual military assistance and closed the Dardanelles to foreign warships at Russia's request. It followed Russian support for the Ottomans against Egyptian forces during the First Turko-Egyptian War. The treaty alarmed Britain and France, who saw it as extending Russian influence over the Ottoman state.
