1811 – 1832Évariste Galois (1811-1832)Died 31 May 1832, aged 20Galois was a French mathematician whose work laid the foundations of group theory and what became known as Galois theory. He died of wounds from a duel in Paris at the age of twenty, under circumstances that remain disputed. Most of his mathematical writings were only recognized as groundbreaking after his death.
