1768 – 1830Joseph Fourier (1768-1830)Died 16 May 1830, aged 62Fourier was a French mathematician and physicist known for Fourier analysis and his study of heat conduction, published in The Analytical Theory of Heat. His mathematical techniques for decomposing functions into sine and cosine series became foundational across physics and engineering. He also served as a scientific advisor during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign.
1830Venezuela and Ecuador secede from Gran ColombiaBolívar's union of northern South America breaks apartVenezuela withdrew from Gran Colombia in early 1830, followed by Ecuador in May, splitting the republic that Simón Bolívar had assembled from former Spanish colonies. The breakup followed years of regional rivalry and resistance to rule from Bogotá. Bolívar resigned the presidency in April and died later that year without seeing the union restored.
1830Indian Removal Act signed into lawUS law authorizes forced relocation of Native American nationsPresident Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act on 28 May 1830, authorizing the federal government to negotiate removal treaties exchanging Native American land in the Southeast for territory west of the Mississippi. The law led to the forced displacement of tens of thousands of Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw and Seminole people over the following decade. It set the legal basis for what became known as the Trail of Tears.
