• 1830 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founded Joseph Smith organizes a new religious movement in New York Joseph Smith formally organized the Church of Christ, later renamed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at Fayette, New York on 6 April 1830. The church grew out of Smith's claimed revelations and the publication of the Book of Mormon weeks earlier. It became the largest denomination within the Latter Day Saint movement, which later migrated west to Utah.
