1828Tariff of Abominations passedUS tariff law provokes Southern backlashThe United States Congress passed a sharply protectionist tariff, raising duties on imported manufactured goods to shield Northern industry. Southern planters, reliant on imports and cotton exports, denounced it as ruinous, and South Carolina politicians began drafting theories of nullification in response. The dispute set the stage for the Nullification Crisis of the early 1830s.
