1828Baltimore and Ohio Railroad construction beginsGroundbreaking for the first common-carrier railroad in the United StatesCharles Carroll of Carrollton laid the first stone at a ceremony in Baltimore, marking the start of construction on the B&O Railroad. It was planned as the first railroad in the United States chartered to carry both passengers and freight for the general public. The line opened in stages over the following years and spurred rapid railroad expansion across America.
